I have never read Moby Dick! I love your slow reading practice. I have been thinking a lot about doing things slower and in old school ways lately, I think largely because of (sigh) all the AI stuff.
I once taught a writing workshop with the very famous (gentle) theologian Eugene Peterson. He was great, but his wife Jan was my favorite. She told me that she and Eugene read books together in the evening--aloud--and ever since, I wanted to try that. It took Moby Dick to get that to happen.
Moby Dick was SO surprising. I mean, we all know the general plot, but the narrative journey was unexpected.
My hack for Moby Dick was listening to the audio book WHILE reading the book; it helped me tackle it and now I’m a monomaniac (ha!) about the tale. And thank you for the TP recos. 🌳🌲
War and peace. I will probably never read it but I feel like I should.
Watership Down is a wonderful read aloud. I read it to my preteen kids years ago. Les Mis. The Count of Monte Cristo. Crime and Punishment.
I remember loving Les Mis in college and Phantom of the Opera!
These are solid recs!

I feel like I know the general plot but not a lot of specifics so I need to give it a go :)

Oh, that's a good hack!
